xTool MetalFab · Gas guide for the operator

Gases, regulators
and controls

Which gas cylinders and valves the xTool MetalFab laser welder and CNC laser cutter actually need – for welding, laser cutting and cleaning metal. Pressures in bar, with the machine's MPa values included.

bar 0.6 12

OXYGEN 0.6 · WELDING 1–2 · CUTTING 6–12

This guide covers the xTool MetalFab 1200 W laser welder and CNC laser cutter, which welds, cuts and cleans metal – stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium, brass and titanium – with a single fibre-laser system. Below you'll find the exact gases, pressures (in bar), regulators and controls that laser welding and metal laser cutting require.

01

Four gases – colour-coded

All at 99.99% purity. The colour runs through the whole guide, so you can see at a glance which cylinder each job needs.

Nitrogen

N2 · 99.99%

All-round gas. Welding, cleaning and cutting most metals. The most affordable inert-gas option.

Argon

Ar · 99.99%

Like nitrogen – and the only option for titanium (TC4). Denser shielding for the weld pool.

Oxygen

O2 · 99.99%

Only for cutting thick (2–10 mm) carbon steel and galvanised sheet. Needs its own nozzle and a low pressure.

Compressed air

dried

An affordable option for cutting. Requires a compressor and an air dryer.

02

Gas and pressure per job

Pressure in bar, the machine's set value (MPa) in small print. Flow in l/min. For thicker cutting, the SaveGas nozzle halves the pressure requirement.

Regulators and controls

Every cylinder needs a regulator that drops the 200 bar cylinder pressure to the working pressure. For fine adjustment you also add a flow or pressure regulator – always before the laser welder.

Welding · cleaning

Flow regulator

Flow (l/min) is easier to control than pressure when welding. The recommended choice for shielding-gas coverage.

15–30 l/min
Welding (alternative)

Pressure-reducing valve

The standard regulator fitted to the cylinder. Suitable for welding when you set pressure instead of flow.

1–2 bar · 0.1–0.2 MPa
Cutting · CNC cleaning

Pressure regulator

For nitrogen, argon and compressed air. The adjustment range must reach well above the cutting pressures.

range over 12 bar · 1.2 MPa
Oxygen cutting only

Proportional / precision pressure valve

Oxygen cutting of thick steel needs a very low and precise pressure. Precision 0.01 MPa.

0.6–0.7 bar · 0.06–0.07 MPa

For installation: an adjustable wrench and thread-seal tape (PTFE). Oxygen is the exception – no ordinary PTFE tape and no oil/grease on oxygen threads.

04

Thick steel = oxygen + precision

Why this is different

When cutting 2–10 mm carbon steel or galvanised sheet, you use oxygen and a double-layer nozzle with an extension tube. The pressure is 0.6–0.7 bar – tens of times lower than in other cutting (6–12 bar). An ordinary regulator won't do this.

Plan A: proportional valve set to 0.6–0.7 bar + flow regulator fully open. (E.g. SMC ITV2050-312BL.)
Plan B: a precision pressure valve that adjusts to 0.01 MPa accuracy – no proportional valve needed.

Safety: oxygen accelerates combustion dramatically. No oil, no grease, only oxygen-rated parts. Open the valve slowly.

Shopping list

Nitrogen cylinder N2 99.99% – all-round gas for most jobs
Argon cylinder Ar 99.99% – alternative to nitrogen, mandatory for titanium
Oxygen cylinder O2 99.99% – only for carbon steel over 2 mm
Regulator for each cylinder, matched to the gas
Flow regulator for welding/cleaning (15–30 l/min)
Pressure regulator, range over 12 bar – for cutting
Proportional or precision pressure valve (0.01 MPa) – for oxygen cutting
All-metal adapter for the 10 mm push-to-connect, rated over 12 bar
Adjustable wrench + thread-seal tape (not on oxygen threads)
Welding wire to match the materialER70S-6 (carbon steel), ER308L (stainless) and 6061 (aluminium): see wires
Compressor + air dryer (over 10 bar, over 200 l/min) if you use compressed air
Cylinder trolley / securing – mandatory for safety
Fume extraction over 325 CFM + OD7+ laser safety goggles, gloves, respirator

Connection tip: the welder's gas inlet is a 10 mm push-to-connect fitting. European cylinder valves differ, and each gas has its own standard – confirm the fitting with your gas supplier (in Finland e.g. Woikoski or Linde/AGA).

Frequently asked questions

What gas does the xTool MetalFab need for laser welding?

For laser welding the shielding gas is nitrogen (N?) or argon (Ar), purity 99.99%, flow 15–30 l/min (or pressure 1–2 bar). Argon is mandatory when welding titanium. The same gas also works for manual laser cleaning.

At what pressure does the xTool MetalFab cut metal?

Thin 0.2–1 mm metal cuts at over 6 bar (nitrogen, argon or compressed air). Thicker stainless, aluminium and brass need over 12 bar – or just 6 bar with the SaveGas nozzle. Thick 2–10 mm carbon steel is cut with oxygen at a very low 0.6–0.7 bar.

Can compressed air replace gas cylinders in metal laser cutting?

Yes. Dried compressed air can replace nitrogen or argon as the cutting gas, saving on cylinder costs. It requires a compressor (rated over 10 bar, output over 200 l/min) and an air dryer. See the xTool MetalFab air compressor and dryer unit.

What regulators and controls are needed for laser welding and cutting?

For welding and cleaning a flow regulator (15–30 l/min), for cutting a pressure regulator whose range reaches over 12 bar, and for oxygen cutting of thick carbon steel a proportional or precision pressure valve (accuracy 0.01 MPa) for the low 0.6–0.7 bar. Each cylinder also needs its own regulator.

Where can you buy the xTool MetalFab laser welder in Finland?

The xTool MetalFab 1200 W is available in Finland from Nettiverstas with Finnish-language product support. Instalment and leasing are also available for companies. See the xTool MetalFab metal workshop in the online store.

What welding wire does the xTool MetalFab use?

The wire is chosen by material: ER308L for stainless, ER70S-6 for carbon steel and galvanised sheet, and 6061 for aluminium. The wire diameter is matched to the sheet thickness. See all welding wires and accessories.
